5 Questions That Will Change Your 2024

It’s almost here. The imaginary line that separates 2023 and 2024 is a few days away, and it brings with it a sense of relief. A sense of joy and wonder — and hope.

But it’s not real. Just like the Chinese New Year, the Financial New Year, The Leap Year and any other ‘years’ that we’ve created — it’s just in our minds.

The buildup is what I want to talk about. It’s noticeable.

The world is holding its breath for the fireworks on New Years eve and with it, the joy of ‘starting over’. So let’s use that energy.

Let’s use it to reflect on 2023.

“We do not learn from experience… we learn from reflecting on experience.” — John Dewey

These questions will help you understand where you went wrong. And where you went right. Where you made good decisions, and where you made bad ones.

What gave you energy, and what took it away. Because that’s all that matters.

Want the strength to wake up at 5am every morning? You need self-discipline.

Want self-discipline? You need energy.

Want the strength to push your plate of food away when you’ve had your fill? You need self-discipline.

Want self-discipline? You need energy.

Want to talk to that girl across the room? You need courage.

Where does courage come from? It comes from a feeling.

A feeling that says ‘I can do this’. I have hope.

Where does that hope come from? It comes from energy.

This exercise is simple. Just take each of the questions, review your calendar, and write down your answers. Do it while you’re reading this because chances are — you’ll never come back to this if you say ‘I’ll do it later’.

Bill Gates, Oprah, Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg, and Warren Buffet all complete their annual reflection and share it. Because there’s a good reason to reflect.

So if you’re reading this on your phone, open a ‘notes’ app and start answering these questions. If you’re on your computer — you know what to do.

Take 20–30 minutes. Remember, it was your whole year. Squeeze as much as you can from it to make your 2024 even better.

1. What things did I change my mind on this year?

If you’re struggling to think of something, here are some examples from my 2023. I changed my mind on:

1. Tony Robbins — I like him now.

2. Staying in the corporate world.

3. Beating myself up — it’s just reducing my energy.

4. Keeping my wallet in my front pocket rather than my back pocket.

It can be anything and everything. If you can’t think of any, think harder.

2. Which ACTIVITIES created energy this year?

My examples:

  1. Exercising,

  2. Cold showers,

  3. Walks,

  4. Writing.

[your answers]

3. What PEOPLE created energy this year?

This one is simple, so try not to lie to yourself. Be honest — who gives me more energy when I spend time with them?

[your answers]

4. Which ACTIVITIES drained my energy this year?

For me, it was emails, checking my investments constantly, and catching the bus. I hate the bus. What is it for you?

[your answers]

5. Which PEOPLE drained my energy this year?

Again, be honest to yourself. No one is going to see what you write, and this is only going to be beneficial if you’re truthful.

There were 8 people on my list. Most of them I’ve known for years.

[your answers]

That’s it. If you got through these, you’re almost done.

The next step is to INCREASE the time you spend on things and people that give you energy. And REDUCE the time you spend on activities and people who take it away.

All of us made mistakes this year — let’s not waste them. Use them to give you the edge in 2024. Let these questions guide you in improving your life.

To end, here’s one of my favourite quotes from a GOAT movie:

“Why do we fall Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” — Thomas Wayne

P.S. Share this with a friend if you got something out of it. You’re more likely to complete these questions if you do them with a friend.
